Video Game Addict
Source: My response on Quora from a question about video game addiction.
Treatment is treatment. Be it, drugs, video games, cell phones they’re all addiction and can be treated the same way. The pattern of an addict is to do the same thing over and over expecting different results, which is the definition of insanity. The sad part is, and some may not know this, that now a day games, tv shows, and movies are purposely developed to get the a person hooked. They’re meant to be addictive to drive sales and maybe even popularity. I just recently saw an ad on my phone talking about a new game. The headline of the game was that it is, fun and addictive! You’ll play for hours. When did being addicted become a good thing? So I come back to the first point I had. An addiction is an addiction no matter what it is and can be treated the same way with rehabilitation and some abstinence from the addiction. I've heard it take’s up to 3–6 years to complete change a habit in the human brain.
The human brain works on a reward system. If we indulge in something enjoyable, we’re reward with a pleasurable feeling. Once you've obtained a high level of pleasure from one thing more then anything else you may not find as much pleasure in other normal enjoyable things. Once an addict is cut from the drug, or video game, it will take time for the dopamine receptors to be normal again. Somethings at first things may not seem as enjoyable as playing a video game, like someone’s birthday for example. But over time the brain forgets the high of the enjoyable act and starts to enjoy other things, but never as much. It’s just tricking the brain into thinking something that is this enjoyable is as enjoyable as THIS. Addiction is commonly brought on by something that is foreignly abnormally enjoyable, unlike the pleasurable reward we get from eating. It is similar to the dog and bell system. A dog here’s a bell he get’s a treat. So every time he here’s the bell he get’s excited and then he get’s the reward, the treat. Then one day he here’s the bell(get’s excited) but doesn't get a treat. He crashes and feel’s low cause he did not get the reward(pleasure from eating the treat) when presented with the stimulus(the bell).
On that note I still invite you to enjoy these games. Unless your video game playing is effecting your life in a negative way and you don't know how to stop. Then I suggest you take the advise I talked about in this post. At the very least be willing to talk to someone about it. The biggest problem I do see now a day is with kids and video games. Kids should not be aloud to sit at home all day everyday and play games. It is essential to your development to be active in other activities. The brain is still growing and learning how to process, but it's hard for the brain to know about other pleasurable activities if you never experience any. Video game addiction could also be a result of just not know what else to do. I advise you kids, make friends. If you don't know someone and your maybe afraid they don't like you well then think this, maybe they think the same thing about you, that maybe you won't like then. We are all humans in this world and we share allot of similar treats with others it's just the way we process them that can be different. Some kid could be lonely and mad at his parents, so he takes it out on other kids. Other kids that could feel the same could take it out on themselves. I advise you to take into consideration the viewpoint of other's and remember no matter how they act, what race they are, what color or what sexual preference, we are all humans and kids are kids. They often experiment with many things. Let's just hope they don't get stuck in a room alone and their only friends are one the Internet.
But anyways I invite you to check my top 5 Most Beautiful and Enjoyable Video Games, and remember to let the sunshine on you every once in a while. TV light can not replace the sun, nothing can but God. God Bless and, "game on!"
